Anne Bancroft: 1931-2005
On my drive to work this morning I heard the sad news that Anne Bancroft passed away Monday night/early Tuesday morning of uterine cancer at the age of 73. She leaves her husband Mel Brooks and their 33-year-old son, Max.
Bancroft is most often remembered as Mrs. Robinson in The Graduate, but I'll remember her best as the ballet star facing an age-related turning point in her career in 1977's The Turning Point, the disapproving mother of a gay man (Harvey Fierstein) who eventually comes around in 1988's Torch Song Trilogy and the powerful Senator trying to balance a desire for women's equality in the military with the reality of Washington politics in 1997's G.I. Jane ("You read, I'll pour."). But these are but a glimpse into the career of this most outstanding of outstanding women in Hollywood, winner of the Oscar, Tony and Emmy (one of eight actors to earn the Oscar and Tony for the same role on screen and stage, in The Miracle Worker). Her Oscar win is accompanied by four additional nominations and a slew of other awards and nominations.
