Breakheart Reservation, Saugus
I haven't been sleeping very well this week, I think because of exams and the related stress. But last night I slept like a rock. Today I got up and tackled another of the Department of Conservation and Recreation parks, Breakheart Reservation. This one's about a 10 minute drive from the house, and is near Route 1 in Saugus. When I first got to the parking lot by the entrance, I was a bit concerned. It's next to a DCR hockey rink and appeared to be very small, but if you go in you'll see the entrance to the very large parking area.
Then it's up the road to the park entrance (photo below), and in I went. This is a great park when you have limited time, as along with lots of trails through the woods and around the lakes, there are also several miles of paved roads that are closed to motorized vehicles. So today, when I was expecting my parents for lunch, I knew that as time got short I'd be able to make an easy exit from wherever I happened to be.
The trails are very well-marked, and were relatively quiet today. I did see a couple of people on horseback on the road, along with a bunch of runners in some sort of road race. I got in about 2.5 hours of hiking before heading back out. Click on the entrance below for the full photoset. Don't forget to view each one individually if you want to see the commentary.
