Building an in house practice

So the talking is done, and I'll be staying at the software company where I've been for the last two years, for at least another year. It's a growing company and does not yet have a legal department - I'm currently a project manager, dealing with implementations of our software at our hospital and clinic client sites and also working on internal process improvements. The higher ups realize they have some work that I could do for them, but don't yet realize that there are a LOT of ways in which they could benefit from having a full time staff attorney. So we worked out a sort of transitional/trial run arrangement, in which I'll continue my current role for a year (but with a two-level promotion within the department) and will also handle the legal work that is assigned to me, but I'll also have the freedom to investigate and propose my own in house legal projects. Basically it's an opportunity for me to create my own opportunity - spend a year demonstrating the value of a legal department. It's kind of like building my own practice, but with a salary and benefits at the same time.

I'm really excited about this, and it makes it a lot easier to focus now that I have a specific goal and area on which to place that focus. Plus now I can plan vacations for next year! First big vacation: The Girl and I are headed to Miami in March. I've never been there, but The Girl has and insists that I'm going to love the beaches. I'm going to look into a kayak tour while we're there, although The Girl will probably opt to remain on the beach that day!
