Another Nom Falls to the Nanny
President Bush's nominee to replace Tom Ridge as Homeland Security Secretary has removed himself from the running. Former NYPD Commissioner Bernard Kerik stated that while he was gathering all his data together for the upcoming confirmation hearings, he discovered that a former housekeeper-nanny in his employ may have been an illegal alien, and he decided to withdraw rather than subject the administration to grilling over why the nominee who would be in charge of cutting down on illegal immigration failed to do so in his own home.
The Nanny Factor has taken down a number of nominees from both sides of the aisle in recent years, including Zoe Baird, a Clinton nominee for Attorney General, and Linda Chavez, a Bush (this one, not the other one) nominee for Secretary of Labor.
So the lesson here is clear - if you're considering a life in public office, particularly in a line of work that involves enforcing immigration and labor laws, make sure you don't violate them yourself. I know it's a hard one to remember, but please do try.
